The Baden winegrowing area stretches for approximately 400 kilometres, covering the nine regions of Tauberfranken, Badische Bergstrasse, Kraichgau, Ortenau, Breisgau, Kaiserstuhl, Tuniberg, Markgräflerland and Lake Constance, and is divided into 16 collective vineyards and 306 individual vineyards.
Baden is the only German winegrowing region which belongs to winegrowing zone B as defined by the EU.
In an EU directive, all vineyard areas in the European Union are divided into winegrowing zones in accordance with climatic criteria. The German winegrowing areas, together with Luxemburg's winegrowing region, belong to winegrowing zone A - with the exception of Baden, which is part of winegrowing zone B thanks to its particularly favourable climatic conditions. Other well-known winegrowing regions in winegrowing zone B are Alsace, Champagne and the Loire valley. Therefore Baden offers the best basic conditions for growing quality wines in the whole country.
