Eventful region of Baden

Baden is spoilt by the sun, and this climatic precondition makes it the ideal growing region for top quality wines. You think now you know everything about Baden? Then let yourself surprise what else this unique region holds ready for you – culinarily, culturally, or actively:

Experience Baden like never before! Simply choose one of the terms below, and you will be forwarded directly to the paragraph you are interested in.

Culinary and convival

No matter if you are a gourmet or a friend of a hearty vesper (typically Baden supper) – here you will find the suitable meal for every taste. The particular variety of rustic wine taverns, delightful star restaurants, kind inns, and convival straußwirtschaften make each trip a culinary highlight. The particular straußwirtschaften are taverns seasonally run by vintners: They are open only when their door is decorated with a colorful bouquet (bouquet = Strauß). Then you can enjoy a traditional specialty like Lake Constance whitefish or Baden Schäufele (porc meat, piece of a shoulder).

Whoever has already been to a Baden tavern appreciates the special mix out of convivality, Baden wine, and genuine meals. During your next visit, you can enjoy this unique experience typical for the region. And if you wish to enjoy still more of our unmistakable Baden: The atmosphere at the numerous wine and street festivals in Baden is convival and kind, too! Vacation and wellness

The range of attractive vacation and wellness offers is as varied as its wines and regions. A number of most different sauna areas and thermal spas offer health, relaxation, and wellness for each taste. The Markgräflerland was known for this quality as early as with the Romans:

The emperor’s and soldiers spas built in Baden-Baden are still offering the occasion to refill your batteries enjoying a good glass of Pinot. Here you can leave the stresses and strains of every-day life behind you, calm down, breathe again, and simply relax.

Activities around wine

For active persons, Baden offers a varied combination of movement and delight. For instance, you can explore the country with its fascinating panorama by bike or on foot, and taste the grapes directly harvested from the vine. Or would you like to learn more about the vines, the soils, and the climate? Then you should take the chance and participate in an exclusive guided tour or a wine tasting in a wine cellar. Many wine estates and vintners’ cooperatives organize events like these several times a year. And if you like it a bit more hilarious you will certainly feel well along the Badische Weinstraße.

For nature lovers we recommend the unique countryside and the varied living environment at the Kaiserstuhl. Due to the Mediterranean climate, you will find rare kinds of animals and plants, such as the praying mantis, the bee-eater, or wild orchids – if you are lucky. Make a detour and visit the golden wine countryside of Ortenau, go sailing in Lake Constance – or what about a nice bike tour through the beautiful Markgräflerland? No matter what you choose: You will experience Baden with all your senses!

In Baden, history and culture won’t be served in a barren manner but delightful and stylish. Numerous fortress ruins, castles, and churches will infuse you with reverent marvel and will make you immerse into bygone times during a guided tour. You can, for instance, explore Bronnbach cloister, which was lovely changed into a wine shop. Today, the former cellarium from the 12th century is harboring fines wines from over 21 vintners and invites you to participate in a historic wine tasting. At the beginning of each year, the whole of Baden is filled with colorful hustle and bustle during carnival, and many processions worth seeing are snaking through the streets.

From age-old pagan customs has developed over the centuries an eerily beautiful event, the peak of which is the “Schmotzige Dunschtig” (literally “Dirty Thursday”, Thursday before Ash Wednesday). For those willing to taste culinary specialties like hearty soups, fish, and carnival Küchle (fried pastry) are prepared especially during this event. Whoever is looking for leisure fun for the whole family, Germany’s biggest and best-known leisure park is the right thing. On an area of 95 hectares, the Europa-Park Rust offers 13 European theme areas with spectacular fairground rides, elaborate shows, and very special overnight accomodations.

Winterwonderland of Baden

While the vines are hibernating, Baden is awakening anew: Particularly in winter, the south-west of Germany offers much variation and leisure fun: snowboard parcours, ski and sleigh slopes. Especially those who love cross-country skiing get their money’s worth around the “Feldberg”, the “Belchen” or the “Hörnle” – in case there is enough snow. When doing Nordic walking you will feel the homely scrunch of the snow below your feet, and during a dazzling hiking tour you will feel the beautifully fresh mountain air in the nose. You can finish the active day in a lonely chalet having fondue with a good glass of Baden wine.

During advent, numerous christmas markets offer a particular charm in the ambience of historic downtowns. Moreover, you will find smaller, less known christmas markets between Bad Mergentheim, Heidelberg, Freiburg and Konstanz. There you have the guarantee to enjoy deligthful regional specialties and a unique flair. Baden offers beautiful landscapes for the eye, good food for the stomach, and great wines for the palate – let the Baden winterwonderland enthuse you!
